Sutton United Women eased to victory on Sunday afternoon, beating Ashford Town 3-0.

Sutton were on top in the early stages of the game – Emma Spear on the left causing issues for the opposition. However, it was on the opposite flank where the U’s started their move to take the lead.

Brianna Gilbert-Lawal found herself with space on the left, using some neat footwork to create a crossing opportunity, which she delivered to Milly Cutler along the floor.

Cutler then took a touch, holding the ball up before laying it off to Tess Allen on the edge of the area, who put her laces through it, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance of saving it.

Ashford seemed committed to maintaining high line, which caught the visitors off guard a few times, but on the 28th minute, Gilbert-Lawal managed to get in behind, passing to Milly Cutler, who, instead of shooting, opted for an unnecessary extra pass to Emma Spear, whose angle to score was narrow and could only hit the side netting.

Just 10 minutes later, another chance fell to Spear, firing over from 12 yards out after a mistake from the home side at the back.

Sutton were impressively on top throughout the first half, suffocating the opposition at every opportunity, and just before half time, they deservedly doubled their lead – Milly Cutler outrageously lobbing the goalkeeper from her 30-yard free kick.

And just minutes into the second half, Sutton picked up from where they left off, Emma Spear going around the goalkeeper for the U’s third of the game.

With Lucy Clark’s side in complete control, the second half was quieter, with neither side really creating a sight of goal. However, on the 70th minute, a ball over the top caused problems for Sutton, but Ashford’s number 11 fired wayward from inside the area, hitting the side netting.

Then, with minutes to play, substitute Becky Olumodeji topped off a dream afternoon, slotting home into the bottom corner from a narrow angle.

The victory means Sutton move into third place in the London & South East Regional Football League Premier Division, sitting on 23 points.
