Sutton United Women suffered their first defeat since September, losing 2-1 to Bromley in the second round of the League Cup.
It was a game that Sutton struggled to get going in and it wasn’t long before the home side were in front, Beth Hull tapping into an empty net after the U’s goalkeeper, Megan Taylor, got beaten to the ball by Mel Espinosa.
Sutton rarely threatened in the first half and were outplayed by Bromley for large parts of it but Rebecca Olumodehi created a brief moment of inspiration, beating her fullback down the left, whipping in a cross to the back post, but no one was there to meet it.
Then, just before the end of the first 45 minutes, it was the turn of Sutton’s other winger, K’Shaela Burch-Waldron, to cause some issues – her cross nearly sneaking in at the near post but Bromley’s goalkeeper, Charlotte Greenwood, was wise to it, diving to push the ball out for a corner.
It was a positive end to a tough first half and Lucy Clark’s side carried this momentum into the second. Gabbie Williams used her speed to get past the defender, breaking into the box and squaring the ball to Milly Cutler, whose effort was brilliantly saved by Greenwood, despite the linesman raising his flag immediately.
The U’s continued to apply the pressure as the game went on, their performance improving significantly but Greenwood was in incredible form and seemed to have an answer to everything. This time, keeping the scores level after Sutton managed to get a flick on towards goal from an in-swinging corner.
However, despite their efforts and deserving to be level, Sutton were punished for not taking their chances, Bromley doubling their advantage from a corner, Daisy Monaghan heading home at the back post on the 70th minute.
Though, a moment later, a mistake at the back from Bromley gifted a chance to Williams, who took a few touches, striding through on goal, and slotting it home, coolie to give Sutton a lifeline in the game.
With time running out, Sutton continued to knock on the door, desperately trying to find an equaliser but the chance never came and the U’s were disappointingly dumped out of the League Cup.
