Sutton United Women started their FA Cup campaign in glorious style, sweeping Burgess Hill Women aside in a dominant 9-0 win.

Sutton were ruthless from the start, leading within two minutes, Gabrielle Williams poking home a spill from the Burgess Hill keeper, Evie Herridge.

Time and time again, Emma Spear was gifted so much space on the right-hand side, and she once again capatalised on it, picking out Williams for a second time, who was never missing from 5 yards out to double Sutton’s advantage.

And before the clock could strike the 10-minute mark, Lucy Clark’s side were three-nil up, Spear with acres of room at the back post to add a goal to her two assists.

The game then proceeded to progress into a bit of a lull, with Burgess looking to steady the ship after a disastrous 10 minutes and just as they appeared to establish some control on the game, Sutton struck again, Spear getting free at the near post from a corner, flicking into the top left.

Emily Oliver and Ella Meehan proceeded to hit the post and crossbar before Speak struck again, this time cutting onto her left, to find the top corner brilliantly, scoring her first hat-trick for the U’s.

Despite being five goals to the good, Sutton’s levels didn’t drop in the second half and on the 51st minute, Williams had a hat-trick of her own, scoring from 5 yards in a goal which she really didn’t know much about.

It really was the Williams and Spear show in Sussex, taking turns to score, and Spear was the next one up, fighting to get on the end of a good ball from Beth Humphries at the back post, somehow turning it home amongst the bodies.

It was a performance from the pair that was dusted in a little bit of FA Cup magic, and despite missing an open goal, Williams managed to get fourth with 10 minutes to go, somehow getting it past a strong Herridge hand.

And just when you thought Sutton were done for the afternoon with the 8 goals, it was Humphrey’s turn to get amongst the action, slotting home coolly from the spot.

It meant the U’s steamrolled their way into the third qualifying round of the FA Cup with the draw for the next round happening tomorrow.

Next week, Sutton return to league action, travelling to Ayelsford.
