K’Shaela Burch-Waldron kept up her fine form in front of goal with a hat-trick as Sutton eased through to the last eight of the Isthmian League Cup at Colston Avenue.

Sutton showed five changes from the weekend FA Cup win against Penn & Tyler’s Green as several members of the development squad were given a first team chance, and as on Sunday U’s scored inside the first five minutes, but this time to take the lead rather than equalise. Emma Spear was put in on the right of the penalty area and squared the ball past the advancing goalkeeper to give Burch-Waldron (left), who had scored twice at the weekend, a tap in. Carshalton went close with two shots from distance, one saved by Megan Taylor and one going wide, but Sutton doubled the lead just after the quarter hour mark when Burch-Waldron headed in from Phoebe Langley’s free kick.

U’s were unable to add to the scoreline before the break despite their pressing game often causing Carshalton problems in retaining possession, with Gabby Williams sending one shot just wide, and early in the second half Spear had a goal disallowed for offside after Williams shot had been blocked, and Burch-Waldron’s low shot was saved by the goalkeeper.

The third goal, and Burch-Waldron’s hat-trick, did come midway through the half and again it was from a Langley set piece, this time a corner which Burch-Waldron headed in. Substitute Becky Olumodeji went close to scoring what would have been the goal of the night, running from halfway and exchanging passes with Spear but then shooting just wide, and Emily Oliver found the net only to be ruled offside as U’s closed out the game with some comfort, Carshalton’s threats restricted to two set pieces that bounced dangerously across goal.

Sutton: M Taylor, L Dunne(sub I James 73), A Warren, E Oliver, B Humphrey, P Langley, E Spear, K Burch-Waldron(sub S Chapman 73), G Williams(sub B Olumodeji 73), H Baptiste(sub C Chase 69), B Gilbert-Lawal(sub S Sumner 69).

This Sunday we are again at Meadowbank, this time for a league game away to Dorking Wanderers (3.30pm) while the development side are at home to Croydon in Collingwood Recreation Ground, also at 3.30pm.
