Sutton United Women progressed into the next round of the Combined Counties Women’s League Cup with a record away victory over Chessington & Hooke United Ladies.
On a freezing cold night, Sutton, despite being much changed, were red hot from the off, Brianna Gilbert Lawal giving the U’s the lead in the first minute.
Phoebe Langley then scored outrageously from a corner, and moments after Becky Olumodeji missed with a toe poke from 6 yards out, the forward put Sutton 3-0 up, finishing coolly when put through on goal.
After a brief hiatus, Olumodeji got the next goal, scoring on the rebound before Sarah Chapman dribbled into the area and squeezed her shot past the goalkeeper to earn Sutton’s fifth.
In the second half, the visitors immediately picked back up where they left off. Substitute Tess Ciccardini getting in on the act before Chapman scored her second of the night to make it 7-0.
Ciccardini was next to join the brace club with the easiest goal of her career, following a moment of unselfishness from Gilbert-Lawal. This was before Cassie Chase scored the best goal of the night, a screamer from outside the area, which was even appreciated by the opposition goalkeeper, who muttered ‘fair play’ as the ball nestled in the net.
Ella Khaldoun then went around the goalkeeper to slot home for Sutton’s 10th and with 10 minutes to go, after brilliant defending from the U’s all night, Chessington got on the score sheet for a consolation goal.
However, Sutton ensured they had the last laugh, Ciccardini with an outrageous lob, completing her hat-trick to end the game.
