Sutton’s recent good run of form came to a crashing halt against a Morecambe side who moved to within three points of the Enterprise National League safety line, scoring four times in the first 25 minutes with Sutton’s afternoon then going from bad to worse as Junior Eccleston was sent off. Paul Lewis scrambled the opener in the sixth minute before Jack Nolan compiled a nine minute hat trick, scoring direct from a free kick, then direct from a corner, and then accepting a gift from Edon Pruti’s misplaced pass that left him with an open goal.

Eccleston departed a minute later after appearing to stamp on Chris Popov, and the ten men rarely looked like making any impression on Morecambe’s lead, Jermaine Francis going closest with a shot (above) that was beaten away by Jamal Blackman. Jack Sims made one good save with his feet to deny Popov but was beaten again eleven minutes from time when substitute Daniel Ogwuru lashed the ball in after a long throw had fallen to him twelve yards out.
