In what would be a foretaste of what was to come at the VBS later in the day, Sutton were denied a victory against the league leaders by a late goal, Wimbledon converting a penalty to cancel out Leo Ginger’s strike that had put U’s ahead with fifteen minutes left.
Wimbledon went in to the game sixteen points clear at the top of the EFL Youth Alliance South East Division, having failed to win only three of their 24 league games, and they went close to going ahead in the first half of this one, hitting the woodwork twice and having a goal ruled out for offside, while Sutton failed to make the most of their best opportunity, an indirect free kick awarded after the goalkeeper had picked up a back pass.
With twenty minutes left Adam Reeves produced a fine interception to cut out a dangerous low cross, and five minutes later Sutton went in front through Ginger, who slotted home from a cross in to the penalty area. As in the reverse fixture in February, when U’s had what would have been a last minute equaliser ruled out for offside, there was to be late disappointment as Derrell Ashia was harshly penalised and Wimbledon converted the resulting penalty to earn them a point.
Sutton: K Muca, C Lee, L Ashburn, T Salaam, A Reeves, D Ashia, O Bello, N Nzuzi, R Ruiz(sub B San Norton 88), B Sheargold, E Yohannes(sub L Ginger 66). Subs n/u H Boateng, G Katana, J Fennelow.
It’s midweek EFL Youth Alliance action this week with U’s away to Leyton Orient on Wednesday (1st April). The game is at Buckhurst Hill FC, kick off 12 noon.
