Sutton consolidated their lead at the top of the National League Academy South Division, taking advantage of the conditions to open up a three goal lead at half time which rarely looked like being threatened.

With a blustery and cold wind on their backs U’s achieved the breakthrough in the 17th minute when Derrell Ashia did well to win possession in midfield before finding Kai McKenzie, whose pass to the right allowed Rashaad Drysdale to fire a shot across the Boreham Wood goalkeeper and inside the far post.

Sutton had a scare soon afterwards when a right wing cross was turned over the bar by a Boreham Wood striker who should have done better, but apart from that Klevis Muca had a quiet half and Sutton enjoyed lots of possession. Drysdale sent one good chance over the bar, but was then involved in the two goals in three minutes at the end of the half that gave U’s control. First his run and cross from the right gave McKenzie a close range finish, and then the two combined again as McKenzie this time controlled Drysdale’s cross before laying the ball back to Jayden Keteku, who seemed to have been crowded out but managed to whip a shot across in to the far corner of the net.

With the conditions in their favour in the second half Boreham Wood began brightly, and Muca had to turn one free kick over the bar, but apart from a couple of long range shots that whistled wide of the post there was little other threat as a quiet second half saw U’s comfortable with a three goal lead, which should have been extended late on when Drysdale was left with a clear shooting opportunity but saw his effort touched wide by the keeper.

Sutton now lead by two points from Dartford, who climbed to second with an 8-1 thrashing of Eastleigh and have played a game more than U’s. Southend lost further ground in the table as they were held 3-3 by Welling, but they have a game on Friday against Aldershot which could see them cut the gap with Sutton to a point.
