Sutton United go into this game second from bottom, hoping to start picking up some momentum after their midweek draw at Woking, following four straight losses in the league.
Andy’s Bet Club’s football analyst will break down Boston United’s recent clash with Boreham Wood, to see what the statistics indicate about how they might set up against Sutton United. Boston have played again since their defeat to Boreham Wood, winning against Braintree on Wednesday.
Boston United vs Boreham Wood
Boston United struggled to create chances in this match, registering just three shots in total and only one on target. Notably, two of those efforts came from set pieces, while their other main route to goal was crosses, with five delivered into the opposition’s box.
On the ball, Boston’s passing was inconsistent. Their overall accuracy of 72% was lower than Boreham Wood’s 79%, and they found particular difficulty with passes into the final third, completing just 49%. The one area they stood out was progressive passing, where they achieved 68% accuracy, compared to Boreham Wood’s 64%.
Although they conceded a high number of shots, Boston were strong in defensive duels, winning 66% of their tackles and limiting Boreham Wood’s open-play chances.
The downside was discipline, as many of these tackles became fouls. This gave Boreham Wood five shots from dead-ball situations and kept the pressure on Boston’s defence. It shows Boston’s physicality can disrupt opponents, but also leave them vulnerable to conceding from set pieces.
Final Thoughts:
Both Sutton and Boston have above the average for goals conceded and below the average for goals scored. Boston’s main issue has been in attack, averaging just 0.9 goals per game, which is likely linked to their low shot volume of only 6.7 per match.
One way they are successful in creating chances is through long passes, averaging 61 per match. They will likely look to these even more with Sutton’s low aerial duel win rate of 39%, compared to 46% for Boston.
This disadvantage in the air could cause further issues for Sutton, as they tend to concede many shots from set pieces, averaging 3.8 per game, which is significantly higher than the 2.1 that Boston produce. If they can increase their set-piece output, it could provide them with valuable extra opportunities in front of goal.
