Horley Town have been confirmed as Sutton’s Surrey Senior Cup Quarter-Final opponents, following their 5-2 win over Sheerwater this evening.
The Clarets came out victorious following a seven-goal thriller with the Sheers at The New Defence, coming from behind early on to secure a comprehensive win.
After the visitors drew first blood through Freddie Bailey, Tyler Chambers’ side responded quickly and levelled after 20 minutes when Arlie Desanges nodded home a Jack Marney corner. Marney then turned from provider to scorer to give Horley the lead just two minutes later, whipping a fantastic effort into the back of the net to give the hosts the advantage, something they held for just eight minutes when Bailey notched his second of the game to make it 2-2 inside the opening half-an-hour.
However, Horley restored their lead before the half was out, with Cameron Gyeabour notching his second goal in as many games on the stroke of the interval, and meant it was the hosts who went into the break ahead.
While the first half brought four goals, the second half perhaps failed to live up to it’s predecessor with the Clarets able to keep their opponents at bay, and they finally extended their lead with five minutes to play through Will Kendall, shortly before Will Block lobbed Sheerwater goalkeeper Fabio Suarez to top off his debut with the fifth and final goal, while they also managed to maintain their three-goal cushion when Sam Saward saved a penalty at the death, and meant it will be Horley who visit SM1 in the last eight of the Surrey Senior Cup.
The Combined Counties side make the trip to Gander Green Lane for the first time since Matt Gray’s first season, with goals from Wayne Brown, Aaron Jarvis and Tommy Wright securing a 3-0 win in the First Round of the competition back in 2019, while the two sides last clashed on the West Sussex border in 2023/24, with an academy side winning 3-1 on their way to the Semi-Final; thanks to a brace from Vinnie Tume and a third goal from George Vorster.
Chris Agutter will be looking to go one better in his first attempt in the Surrey Senior Cup though, having so far guided the U’s to success in the last two rounds of the competition, with a 5-0 romp over Guildford City to kick-start their campaign before dispatching of AFC Croydon Athletic in the previous round, with Eduino Vaz notching the decisive winner to secure their place in the last eight for the first time since 2024.
A date and kick-off time for the match will be confirmed in due course.
