The Sutton United End of Season Awards’ Ceremony took place following yesterday’s final home game of the season against Altrincham, and we were honoured to welcome a number of U’s supporters alongside staff, players and Directors.
The centrepiece of the evening saw a host of awards handed out, with the winners of the Player of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season, Supporters’ Club Player of the Season, Young Player of the Season, Goal of the Season and Clubman of the Year being revealed.
Player of the Season – Jake Taylor
Presented by Strike.com
Perhaps the club’s signing of the season, Jake Taylor has proved to be the missing piece of the jigsaw since signing on a permanent deal from Eastleigh in November.
The midfielder has swiftly become a key cog at the heart of Sutton’s midfield, racking up 25 appearances in all competitions. His integral role in Chris Agutter’s men rising from the bottom of the table has been echoed by the U’s losing just nine times with him in the side, displaying both composure and aggressiveness at the base of Sutton’s engine room.
Players’ Player of the Season – Lewis Simper
Presented by Aaron Jones
Lewis Simper made it two Player of the Season awards in a row, following on from his triumph last term with the Players’ Player of the Season award this term.
The former Cambridge United man has once again been the architect of much of the U’s attacking play, notching 14 goals in all competitions, as well as pulling the strings with a fierce delivery, a dangerous eye for goal and a determined mindset, being rewarded for his efforts by winning the vote from his peers.
Supporters’ Club Player of the Season – Kai Jennings
Presented by Alison Holloway
The phrase ‘never fall in love with a loan player’ is certainly epitomised by Kai Jennings, who left a lasting impression from his time at Sutton after being recalled by parent club AFC Wimbledon towards the end of the season.
The midfielder became without a doubt one of the best players in the division with his composure, work rate and creativity from the centre of the park, as well as firing home ten goals including a Goal of the Season contender against Hartlepool United. His time at Sutton saw him stamp down his rise from loan spells at Walton & Hersham in the Southern League last season and Farnborough in the National League South at the start of the campaign, before going on to earn four League Two appearances for the Dons since returning to Plough Lane, as a result of his fine form for the U’s.
Young Player of the Season – Junior Eccleston
Presented by Terry Bullivant
Junior Eccleston’s first season as a professional footballer has received a neat little bow, with the 18-year old ending the campaign with the Young Player of the Season award.
Having knocked on the door of the first team last season, making his senior debut at home to Ebbsfleet United back in September 2024, he later signed his pro deal ahead of the 2025/26 campaign and has gone on to become a crucial part of the side, going as far as replacing club captain Aaron Jones to make 31 appearances in all competitions, including one goal – the opener against FC Halifax Town. His versatility has made him an integral part of Agutter’s side, filling in at centre back, full back and wing back, with his tenacity and work rate making him one of the U’s brightest players, with his boss echoing this sentiment on numerous occasions.
Goal of the Season – Lewis Simper vs Gateshead
Presented by Harry Dunne
Lewis Simper brought home two awards for the second year in a row with an almost identical collection; his takeaways including the Goal of the Season award for his rocket against Gateshead, the second year in a row he’s done so against the Heed.
The midfielder added another outstanding strike to his showreel, giving Sutton the lead early on in the second half as Sutton swept past Gateshead, with the first five minutes of the second half proving the decisive period as the U’s came out from the break on the front foot, and within 30 seconds of the restart Jake Taylor, Simper and Jayden Harris linked well to release Junior Eccleston on the right and he laid the ball back to Simper, who won last season’s Goal of the Season with an effort against Gateshead and who set up the possibility of a repeat result with a stunning, dipping, curling shot from 25 yards out.
Clubman of the Year – James Board
Presented by Tim Vine
James Board has been a volunteer within the media section of the Club for many years, and has now been recognised for his crucial role in the running of Sutton United FCtv.
He is a regular on matchdays providing filming services, but has also introduced additional cameras both pitchside and inside the goals to add enhancements to the service. James regularly helps out with other sections of the Club too, and he was particularly involved in the recent incident where DAZN failed to send anyone to capture the Southend fixture filling in at short notice to spare the blushes of the National League too with many passes sold to supporters that would otherwise have had to have been refunded.
