Will Nightingale becomes the fifth player to join the ranks at Gander Green Lane for the 2026/27 season, joining following his departure from Aldershot Town.
Here’s everything you need to know about the defender and his story so far…
Name: Will Nightingale
Age: 30
Position: Defender
Former Clubs: AFC Wimbledon, Ross County (loan), Aldershot Town
The Wombles
Hailing from Wandsworth, only 11 miles from his new club, Nightingale joined the academy ranks at AFC Wimbledon at the age of nine – just two years after the phoenix club’s formation – and subsequently called South London his home for the next 21 years, spending a decade in the academy before progressing through the ranks to make the step up to the first team at the age of 18.
He became officially involved for the first time as an unused substitute in a 2-0 defeat to Torquay United, before agreeing his first professional deal following the conclusion of the 2013/14 season, and preceded his first team debut as a late substitute in a 3-1 defeat to Carlisle United in January 2015. Despite a disappointing afternoon for the team, Nightingale was rewarded with his first start the following week, producing a Man of the Match display as the Dons beat Accrington Stanley 2-1, and he received praise from manager Neal Ardley – someone who would be his long-term boss at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.
Nightingale subsequently received his first piece of silverware – playing a brief role in the Dons winning promotion to League One via the play-offs in 2015/16, before breaking into the side during the 2017/18 season, having featured sparingly until this point, with the defender racking up 21 appearances in all competitions as well as scoring his first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw with Scunthorpe United. He went on to prove his worth the following season, something which was recognised as he was named the club’s Player of the Season for the 2018/19 campaign, contributing to Wimbledon achieving survival despite being ten points adrift of safety in February.
His form during the campaign saw him rewarded with a new deal, and in all he went on to rack up more than 200 appearances for the club, as well as notably scoring the first Wimbledon goal in front of fans at the newly built Plough Lane stadium – topping off a period where be arguably produced the best form of his career before injury intervened.
Such was the defender’s impact and longevity at the club, on June 1st, following the announcement of his departure, Wimbledon hosted a testimonial to honour his services, with former teammates such as Barry Fuller, Paul Robinson and Adebayo Akinfenwa kitting up once more to show their respects to his tenure.
Time Away
The final two years of Nightingale’s time at Wimbledon saw him spend it across the border, making the move to Scottish Premiership side Ross County on a season-long loan in 2023.
He made 28 appearances for the club and firmly established himself as a fans favourite in his initial spell with the Staggies, earning a return for the 2024/25 campaign. However, injuries halted his progress at Dingwall, limiting him to just a handful of appearances during his second spell, before moving back to England with a switch to Aldershot Town.
He enjoyed a short, yet extremely memorable stay with the Shots, again becoming an instant fan favourite during a retrospectively solitary campaign at the EBB Stadium. Nightingale made 38 appearances in all competitions across the 2025/26 campaign, securing three home Man of the Match awards, and contributing significantly to crucial away clean sheets against Boston, Sutton, Hartlepool and Morecambe during the club’s successful run at the beginning of the calendar year.
Will also produced some memorable moments in front of goal, scoring thrice for the Shots with strikes against local rivals Woking and Eastleigh, before perhaps his most memorable moment in red and blue, a half-volleyed equaliser against FC Halifax Town in February, a goal that proved to catalyst for an eventual 3-2 comeback in front of the East Bank.
The centre-half’s performances were lauded by colleagues and spectators alike, as he claimed both the ‘Supporters Club Members’ Player of the Season’ and ‘Player’s Player of the Season’, with these awards received in late April following the conclusion of the National League campaign.
Nightingale’s Knowhow
Nightingale is a rugged, traditional center-back who excels in aerial duels, strong tackling, and frequent defensive clearances.
His dominance in the air is categorised by his physical strength and dominance in aerial duels, while he is also highly aggressive, frequently diving into tackles and committing fouls when necessary to disrupt the opposition.
The experienced centre back offers plenty of know how with almost 200 appearances in the EFL alone, with his primary instinct being to clear the ball out of danger rather than playing overly complicated passes from the back.
