Unbeaten in the league this season, Worthing Women came into today’s FA Cup match full of confidence. Dominating play from the first whistle, it took 20 minutes for the deadlock to be broken, Sophie Humphrey managing to squeeze a shot in at the near post. It was the final 10 minutes of the half where the game was taken away from Sutton, goals from Russell, Bell and two from Ella Newman before the break left for an unenviable task in the second half.
Sutton came out in the second half looking much more of a threat. Mika Keen with a chance from close range went over the bar, Watson forced a good save after a shot from range and good goalkeeping denied Lily Dent from running through to score.
On the 78th minute, Sutton’s faint hope was ended when Bell scored her second of the match. There was still time for Georgia Tibble, who had been unplayable all match, to score a brace before the final whistle.
Sutton Women bow out of the FA Cup to a side who look strong favourites for promotion from the league this season.
Next week is the re-arranged league cup fixture away to Bromley FC, 3pm kick off on Sunday 20th.
Elsewhere Sutton reserves suffered a 3-2 defeat at Collingwood Recreation Ground against Ashmount Leigh.
