Sutton’s hopes of repeating last season’s FA Cup successes ended in the first round today when Jabo Ibehre’s goal just before half time was enough to give Cambridge victory. The goal came just after the home side had been reduced to ten men as George Maris was sent off for a second yellow card. Sutton came close to an equaliser when Kieron Cadogan hit the post, and although Ibehre also hit a post for Cambridge it was the visiting U’s, with the backing of nearly 500 supporters, who did most of the pressing in search of an equaliser, but Ross Lafayette, on as a first half substitute for the injured Nicky Bailey, stabbed a close range shot at goalkeeper David Forde, while Cadogan sliced a half volley wide and Forde made a fine save in stoppage time from Adam Coombes.
