It seemed as though U’s were in for a long afternoon when Ebbsfleet scored twice in the first eight minutes, only for Lily Dent to immediately pull a goal back (below), and midway through the half Olivia Watson forced in the equaliser (above). It took only a minute for Ebbsfleet to regain the lead, but Watson struck again eleven minutes before half time. However U’s till trailed at the interval as Ebbsfleet scored in stoppage time, and two goals in the first fifteen minutes of the second half appeared to have put Ebbsfleet in control at 6-3.
The comeback began four minutes after Ebbsfleet’s sixth goal as Dent scored her second with a long range effort, and with eleven minutes left she completed her hat trick from the penalty spot. The equaliser came from a trademark Jas Backhurst free kick from outside the penalty area, making it 6-6 with six minutes left.
It looked as though the afternoon would end in heartbreak for U’s when Ebbsfleet scrambled in a seventh in stoppage time, but there was still time for Anjola Ogunyemi to mark her Sutton debut by bringing the scores level again at 7-7 before the final whistle went on a breathless encounter.
Next week we are scheduled to play Worthing in the home game that was postponed last Sunday, and the venue will be confirmed when known.
