The Magpies were just pipped to the Vanarama National League title by Wrexham as both sides recorded over 100 points in the regular league season, but secured their return to the EFL after a four season absence by beating Chesterfield on penalties in a thrilling play-off final at Wembley. The game will provide an immediate return to Sutton for Will Randall, who has joined County after leaving U’s at the end of last season.
The home game against County will be followed in midweek by the first round of the Carabao Cup, which is drawn at 2.30pm this afternoon live on Sky, before U’s make the trip to Barrow on Saturday 12 August. This is followed by a Tuesday night home game against Gillingham and a local derby at home to AFC Wimbledon, before U’s travel to Newport on the Saturday of the August Bank Holiday weekend.
Those three sides make up Sutton’s Christmas programme, with a visit to Plough Lane on Tuesday 26 December followed by an away game at Gillingham on Friday 29 December before Newport come to the VBS on New Year’s Day.
There are seven midweek fixtures including the two mentioned against Gillingham, with National League champions Wrexham one of two sides, along with Crewe Alexandra, who U’s will face home and away on a Tuesday night (the away game at Wrexham on Tuesday 24 October). Sutton will also host Salford on a Tuesday night in early October, with the return game on Good Friday, while Easter Monday will see a visit from Swindon Town.
Sutton supporters will get a chance to go to two new grounds during the season, with trips to Accrington on Saturday 16 September and Morecambe, who have moved grounds since U’s only previous visit in 1999, on Saturday 10 February.
The season is due to finish on Saturday 27 April when U’s will be away to MK Dons.
The full fixture list can be found here.
A reminder that the next fixture news will come just before lunch when an Under 21 side will be added to the EFL Trophy group that currently comprises Sutton, Charlton and Crawley, with that draw live on Sky and the EFL twitter channels at 11.30am, and this will be followed by the Carabao Cup first round draw at 2.30pm, again live on Sky and the EFL Twitter channels.
