The Adventure Continues

9 September 2018

When it was first announced that Sutton United had been invited to enter the IRN-BRU Cup this season, some people questioned the wisdom of entering this competition. Well, they had their answer yesterday. Thanks to the meticulous organisation of the travel and accommodation over two days from club director David Mathers and the superb winning  goal from Tommy Wright, we find ourselves in the 3rd round draw on Tuesday. The usual detailed preparation from Dos and his management team and an excellent performance from the players has enabled this club to create another small piece of football history-the first English club to win a match in the prestigious IRN-BRU Cup. So well done to them all.A huge thank you to my fellow directors and management committee members who made the effort to ensure that this football club was very well represented in the Airdrieonians boardroom-and how well were they rewarded from the moment we entered the club to the moment we got back on the coach, the hospitality was exceptional. This was led magnificently by Airdrieonians Chairman Bobby Watson and every one of his colleagues-we were made so welcome and have certainly made some new friends. Results of which Sutton official managed to eat the most cream cakes at half time will be announced in due course! The club were presented with a magnificent inscribed glass decanter which was filled with a liquid that resembles cold tea! Wonderful hosts. To each and every one of over 100 of our supporters who made the 850 mile round trip by car, by overnight coach, by train and by plane I salute you-you should all be very proud-an absolutely superb effort, out singing the home supporters throughout the 90 minutes, a turnout that was hugely appreciated by Dos, the management team and all the players. Also brilliant work from the guys from SUFC TV who managed to sort the technology needed to 'live' stream the game to GGL, another first for Sutton United, which enabled about 60 supporters to watch the match 'live' in our own club room.Surely, football should be about enjoyment-and if you ask anyone who travelled yesterday whether they be a player, supporter or official I am certain they will confirm that box has been ticked.Well done to everyone for contributing to another special day for Sutton United,'We were there'Bruce Elliott, Chairman, Sutton United Football Club.
