Havant & Waterlooville v Sutton preview

8 July 2022

After an encouraging start at Dorking on Tuesday, Sutton's pre-season programme continues on Saturday with a trip down the A3 to face former manager Paul Doswell and several former Sutton players at Havant & Waterlooville. U's will be wearing black.

Unlike Tuesday's opponents, Havant & Waterlooville were consigned to another season in National League South in May when a home defeat by Chippenham on the last day of the season saw the Wiltshire side grab the last play-off place at Havant's expense, and Paul Doswell has gone for experience in his summer signings, particularly in attack where he has secured the services of much travelled striker Danny Wright, who U's have encountered with Torquay and Solihull in recent seasons, and Jason Prior, returning for a second spell at the club after helping Dorking Wanderers to promotion last season.

Also signed are winger Gianni Crichlow from Braintree and defender Joash Nembhard, who U's fans will remember as part of the squad that won the National League title in 2021, while as well as Paul Doswell and Ian Baird, U's could also come up against goalkeeper Ross Worner, striker Tommy Wright and defender Jamie Collins, inducted in to the Sutton Hall of Fame earlier this year.

For manager Matt Gray, a former Havant player, it's a chance to build on Tuesday's start in which goals from Donovan Wilson and Will Randall earned a 2-1 win after Jon Barden's early own goal. Omar Bugiel and Joe Kizzi, who both missed Tuesday's game through illness and paternity leave respectively, are expected to play a part in the game.

Admission is all pay on the day in cash, £10 for adults and £5 for children.

The Draper Tools Community Stadium, previously known as Westleigh Park, is in Martin Road, postcode PO9 5TH, reached by leaving the A3(M) at junction 2 and taking the B2149 through Rowlands Castle, turning left in to Bartons Road just after the entrance to Staunton Country Park, then right in to Martin Road.

Havant station is about a 15-minute walk from the ground. The 11.54 off Sutton gets to Havant at 13.48 with one change at Horsham, or the 12.13 arrives at 14.17, changing at Epsom and Guildford. Return at 17.40, changing at Guildford and Epsom. For more details and other options (via Clapham Junction or Croydon) go to www.nationalrail.co.uk. From the station exit from the eastbound platform, not the main exit, walk along Leigh Road until reaching the main road and then keep going until you see the ground on the right.

Unfortunately we are not able to provide a Mixlr commentary on the game as the Board at Havant have requested that there be no live commentaries on their home friendlies, including on their own Mixlr service. We will have updates throughout the afternoon on Twitter.
