Swindon v Sutton preview

14 March 2022

Sutton's run of five away matches out of six continues on Tuesday with a visit to the County Ground to face a Swindon Town side who moved above U's on Saturday in a very close promotion race. U's will be wearing amber for the game.

Swindon won on Saturday with a stoppage time goal against Oldham, while U's went down to a disputed penalty at Walsall, which put Swindon in sixth place, a point ahead of U's who have a game in hand, but with just seven points covering second placed Northampton and tenth placed Port Vale it is very tight at the top of the table behind Forest Green, who are eight points clear.

Swindon were impressive on their visit to the VBS in October, scoring two excellent first half goals but after Harry Beautyman's penalty had halved the deficit U's put them under real pressure and if Joe Kizzi's late header had been either side of goalkeeper JoJo Wollacott the points may well have been shared.

Swindon's success has been based on excellent away form, with no side having won more games on their travels, but at home no side in the top half of the table has won fewer games, although three of their wins at the County Ground have come in the last month and included a 5-0 hammering of Walsall. That was without striker Tyreece Simpson, who was impressive against U's in October but was recalled from his loan by Ipswich in January.

U's defeat on Saturday was only the second this year, but manager Matt Gray has a number of injury concerns before the game, with three players forced out of the Walsall game before half time.

Sutton supporters with long memories will hope that Tuesday's game may erase the memory of U's only previous visit to the ground, when an injury time goal gave Swindon a 2-1 win in the second round of the FA Cup in December 1981 after Micky Joyce had given U's the lead in the first half.

Tickets are available on the night at the County Ground, prices as follows: Adults £23; Over 65/Student £17; Under 21 £10; Under 18 £6; Under 11 £1. Disabled supporters admitted at the relevant price with a carer admitted free. Our accommodation is in the Arkell's Stand.

The Supporters' coach leaves at 3.00pm, and for independent drivers car parking is available at St Joseph's School (SN3 3LR), a short five minute walk to the ground, price £5. Leave the M4 at junction 15 and take the A419 north.  At the first roundabout take the first exit on to Marlborough Way, the A4259. At the next roundabout take the second exit to carry on in to Queens Drive. Continue until the next roundabout, where you turn right in to Drakes Way then bear left in to Ocotal Way for the car park.

For those travelling by train it only takes an hour from Paddington to Swindon, with a frequent service, and it is possible to return after the game and get back the same night. Swindon station is about a 10 minute walk from the ground. From the front of the station turn left onto Station Road. Facing the White House pub, head right onto Corporation Street. At the traffic lights turn left onto Manchester Road. At the end of Manchester Road turn right onto County Road. The entrance to the stadium is the second left.

As this is a scheduled midweek match it will be streamed live through our i-Follow service, priced £10. You can buy a pass here, with revenue generated from sales to Sutton supporters coming to Sutton.
