Academy victory over table toppers

26 November 2022

Our academy side recorded their best EFL Youth Alliance win of the season so far, and their third league victory in a row, when Daniel Olabiyi's first half goal ended Luton's 100% league record and moved Sutton up to fourth place in the South East Division.

Going in to the game the Hatters had won all eleven of their league games, scoring 47 goals and conceding just five, and had beaten Sutton 7-0 in the reverse fixture last month, but Sutton were well worth the win. Olabiyi's goal came around the half hour mark when he drifted in from the left and curled a well placed shot beyond the goalkeeper and inside the post.

Luton thought they had equalised soon afterwards when a deflected shot looped over goalkeeper Sam Roberts, but the assistant's flag was up to indicate that the ball had gone out of play earlier in the move.  Sutton defended superbly throughout the second half, Roberts pushing one close range shot on to the post having made one fine save in the first half, and always threatened on the break without being able to add to the one goal which proved to be enough.
