Tranmere v Sutton preview

1 March 2024

After Tuesday's thrilling win at Notts County which moved Sutton to within four points of Grimsby, U's will look to continue the battle to climb out of the Sky Bet League Two relegation zone at Tranmere Rovers on Saturday, kick off 3pm. Sutton will be wearing green.

Tuesday was a memorable evening for U's, who led three times only for Notts County to equalise on each occasion, but Charlie Lakin's penalty put put Sutton ahead for a fourth time and this time U's held on for three valuable points, completing the double over the Magpies. . At the same time Tranmere were going down to a 3-1 defeat at Swindon, a second successive defeat after they had lost by the only goal at U's relegation rivals Forest Green on Saturday. That was Tranmere's fourth defeat in five games, a run which has halted their climb away from the lower reaches of the table, although the fifth game was an impressive 4-0 win against high-flying Stockport at Prenton Park in their last home game a fortnight ago. When the sides met at Sutton in November only two points separated them, with nothing separating them on the pitch as Ben Goodliffe's early own goal was cancelled out near the end by Louis John, but Tranmere go in to Saturday's game in 18th place, fourteen points ahead of Sutton and having won nine of their seventeen home games this season.

Harry Beautyman is back in contention for selection after injury, with no new injury worries after Tuesday's game, but one player not involved again this season will be striker Hisham Kasimu,  who has now made his loan move to Farnborough permanent just over a year after signing for Sutton from the Hampshire side but having his progress hampered by injury. Steve Morison discusses that, and the rest of the current squad position, in his pre-weekend interview which will be available later on Friday.

Saturday's referee is Ruebyn Ricardo, on the National League list but who refereed his first EFL League Two game on Tuesday, taking charge of Harrogate v Newport. He was fourth official for U's visits to Wrexham and Stockport this season, and refereed the National League South play-off semi final between Dartford and St Albans last season.
