Sutton v Corinthian Casuals preview

9 April 2024

Sutton return to Surrey Senior Cup action this evening with a home quarter final against Corinthian Casuals, and whereas in the previous two rounds the Sutton side has comprised almost entirely academy players, a number of the first team squad that haven't featured in the starting line-ups in League Two games are likely to play a part tonight as Steve Morison is keen for all the squad to have match fitness going in to the crucial last fortnight of the EFL season. Kick off is 7.30pm and there are no reported problems with the pitch.

Sutton have reached this stage with victories away to Epsom & Ewell (2-1) and Horley Town (3-1), while Casuals came through on penalties in the second round against Lingfield after a 1-1 draw, and although their time in this season's competition then appeared to have come to an end with a 2-0 home defeat by Woking, they were reinstated and put through to the quarter finals after Woking were found to have fielded an ineligible player.

Corinthian Casuals are currently at the foot of the Isthmian South Central Division, just a point behind Binfield but then with a further ten point gap to Chipstead, and Saturday's 2-1 home success against Northwood was their first league win since 18 November. U's will need to keep a watch on striker Aderi Arthur-Dede, who has scored in each of Casuals' last five games.

This is the first meeting between the sides since January 2016, when U's won 3-1 at Tolworth in a third round Surrey Senor Cup tie with goals from Tommy Wright, Reyon Dillon and Aidan Brown, the last two registering their only senior goals for the club.

Should the scores be level after ninety minutes this evening the game will go straight to penalties with the winners facing a home semi final against Farnham Town or AFC Croydon Athletic, who play this Thursday.

Admission this evening is just £5 for adults and £2 for concessions, all pay on the night. Under 12s are admitted free if accompanied by a paying adult or concession. Season tickets are not valid, and admission will be via turnstiles 1 and 2 at the Gander Green Lane end of the ground, card and cash payment accepted.

Tickets will be on sale tonight before the game in Ambers' Bar for Saturday's game at Harrogate, where it is not guaranteed that tickets will be available on the day and if they are they will need to be bought on line. Full details are here. Tickets wll also be on sale for the home game against Crawley and the last game of the season at MK Dons, as well as season tickets ahead of the closure of the early bird window on Friday.

Sutton supporters will no doubt also be keeping a watch on an important night of action at teh bottom of the League Two table, with Colchester at home to Stockport, Grimsby away to Harrogate, Sutton's opponents on Saturday, and Forest Green away to Mansfield.
